I really enjoy cooking now but even when I didn’t there was still a list of kitchen tools that I had to have. Let’s face it. There are just some things that a kitchen can’t be without!
Here is my list of must haves in the kitchen:
- A sharp 8″ or 10″ chef’s knife.

A sharp chef’s knife can completely revolutionize your culinary abilities and save your skin. Most accidental cuts happen as a result of using a dull knife. A good bit of time is wasted when using a dull knife because it takes as much as three times as long to cut through something. You can purchase one for as little as $20 but be sure to get a sharpener to go with it. It is well worth the money. - Pan Scrapers

I was first introduced to these handy little things back in my Pampered Chef days. You get one with the purchase of each stone and they are supposed to be used to clean to stone. I hate one use items. I like for things to have many uses and I quickly found other uses for them. I have one in each of my cleaning kits. I have them by the sink for when I am cleaning the counter or wiping the table. I keep one with the mop and bucket. Anytime I come across something that is dried on or that can’t simply be wiped away, I pull out the scraper. What a time saver this is! I now use another brand because they are somewhat stronger in my opinion but any of these little guys is worth having and at $2.50 for a set of three – no home should be without them! - Kitchen Shears

I have a pair of Henckel Kitchen Shears but any good pair will do. A good pair is one that can be sharpened and doesn’t get stuck after a few uses. I use to cut open packages, cut meat, dough, whatever and then I toss them in the dishwasher and they are good to go for next time. - Dental Floss – regular unflavored kind

This is one of the tools in my bag-o-tricks. I use floss to cut anything that that could crumble or is gooey like cheesecake, cake squares, jello squares, etc. It gives me a perfectly clean cut every time. - Nylon Scraper

I don’t know what I would do without my nylon scrapers. I have them in every shape and size. I use them to clean out jars, scrape bowls clean of their yummy goodness, and I can use them in my non-stick pots with no worries. They are also heat resistant up to 600 degrees. - Measuring Spoons

I use these for more than spices. I have several sets. We use them for baking, cooking, medicine taking, and more. - Cutco Spatula Spreader

This is my most favorite of all my tools. I have never had to sharpen it. I use it all the time for sandwiches and I use it as a spatula too. Nothing else can remove cookies in one piece from the pan like this thing can. It grips well. It is resilient too. I’ve had it for more than five years and it was worth every penny. I love this thing. I really, really, love it!
Well there you have my favorites. What are some of yours and why?
Honey, don’t read this post. I am not buying any more kitchen stuff. I promise, k?

Wowzer, okay, did NOT know about the floss. What a great idea. And I’ve been wanting those pan scrapers BADLY…need to remember to get those for myself for my Christmas stocking. LOL!
Another must have thing for the kitchen, which is not really a “tool,” but it’s those gripping jar opener sheets.” I use them all the time. I also must have my scrubbing brush with a handle to wash dishes so I don’t have to get my hands wet.
Awesome post!
The floss was a new one for me…your list was great.
While not exactly a kitchen tool, a Gripit Floss Holder will keep your fingers out of your mouth when flossing. You can see Gripits in action at http://www.gripit.biz.
I have recently been introduced to the world of Pampered Chef, and I too love the scrappers…but absolutely love my food chopper and mandolin…both tools that I use on an almost daily basis! Also, love my electric skillet by Rival and my CROCKPOT!!! I never really used to cook that much but since staying at home with my children I am doing it more and more and with great tools and I getting more and more creative!
Very good suggestions! It is hard to emphasize the usefulness of GOOD kitchen tools for cooking. Without them, cooking is a chore and a cook quickly lose interest in the kitchen. In fact, I devoted a full chapter to this subject: Kitchen Tools to Keep, Kitchen Tools to Trash in my new book (Nov/08):
“Tried and True Recipes from a Caterer’s Kitchen—Secrets of Making Great Foods”

uhmm.. did you forget an apron? or is it just me who need it? lol…
You are so much of a better cook than I am. I wish I was advanced enough to have a list like that of “go to” tools. I basically grab whatever is near when I cook and try to make it work.
I went to a Cutco demo when I was in college and fell in love. I ended up selling them but I also bought a set (since I could get it for a discount). ALL of my knives are Cutco and so are my kitchen shears.
Aluminum foil is another one of the must have items in my kitchen. I use it to line cookie sheets, broiling pans and to wrap up meats (for freezing or cooking). It makes clean up much easier – which means my husband is much more likely to do it!
