Our family loves chocolate syrup. We pour it on ice cream, deserts and of course, chocka malk (that is what Matthias calls it). Chocolate milk is a nightly tradition in our home so having an ample supply of chocolate syrup is a must. A while back I found my grandma’s recipe for cocoa. I tried it, modified it, and came to a recipe that my family agrees is more tasty than the stuff from the store.
I make it one bottle at a time and it lasts us about a week and a half. I store it in a recycled olive oil jar. It is the perfect size to hold this recipe.
Homemade Chocolate Syrup Recipe
- 3/4 cup cocoa
- 1 – 1/2 cups water
- 1 – 1/2 cups sugar
- 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
- pinch of sea salt
Heat water and cocoa in a sauce pan until cocoa melts. Add sugar. Stir until it dissolves. Bring to a boil and allow it to simmer for about 3-5 minutes until it thickens. Remove it from the heat and allow it to cool completely. Add salt and vanilla. Stir well. Put it into a glass bottle or jar. Label it. Enjoy!
NOTE: This will keep in your refrigerator for at least 3 months.
