Cocoa: Homemade Chocolate Syrup Recipe w/Printable Label {Pantry Staples}

Day 17

Our family loves chocolate syrup. We pour it on ice cream, deserts and of course, chocka malk (that is what Matthias calls it). Chocolate milk is a nightly tradition in our home so having an ample supply of chocolate syrup is a must. A while back I found my grandma’s recipe for cocoa. I tried it, modified it, and came to a recipe that my family agrees is more tasty than the stuff from the store.

I make it one bottle at a time and it lasts us about a week and a half. I store it in a recycled olive oil jar. It is the perfect size to hold this recipe.

Homemade Chocolate Syrup Recipe

  • 3/4 cup cocoa
  • 1 – 1/2 cups water
  • 1 – 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
  • pinch of sea salt

Heat water and cocoa in a sauce pan until cocoa melts. Add sugar. Stir until it dissolves. Bring to a boil and allow it to simmer for about 3-5 minutes until it thickens. Remove it from the heat and allow it to cool completely. Add salt and vanilla. Stir well. Put it into a glass bottle or jar. Label it. Enjoy!

NOTE: This will keep in your refrigerator for at least 3 months.

    I made some “Brown Moo” for the first time this weekend. Just had to stop in and say mmmmmmmmm!!! And no artificial flavors or preservatives 🙂 This is gonna be a regular in my house. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Ok, yummo!!! We love, love, love chocolate milk, or chocolate syrup on vanilla icecream (with a little malt sprinkled on top). I wonder if this would even last three days in my house. Seems SO much better than buying the store bought stuff with all the “extra” ingredients! Do you have a favorite brand of cocoa that you use???

  3. Do you add the vanilla and salt after it has cooled?

  4. Our boys are teenagers and they still like chocolate milk -either when they get home from school or in the evening. They would really like to know I made the chocolate syrup –we will have to try this thanks

  5. Amy, this looks so good! Since your family uses up one bottle so quickly, I wonder how long it would safely last in the refrigerator. We don’t use up syrup that quickly, so I’m curious. Would you happen to know?
