No Bake Protein Energy Bars / Bites Recipe – Snacks for Kids

We are now an official football family. Not just the kind that watches the Saints and LSU tigers every time they grace the field but the kind who bring kids to practice, cheer real loud even when they mess up, and put up with smelly uniforms. I knew that with four boys eventually it would come to this.

Another problem we are facing is the ability to keep said kid full of calories and protein to play football. Coach wanted us to stock up on protein snack bars but I wasn’t excited about the cost of those things. Then, I remembered a recipe my little sis, Tori, sent to me a while back. It is a snack ball that is full of natural, wholesome ingredients packed with protein. They are easy to make and don’t cost a fortune.

To make these Easy No Bake Protein Snacks you’ll need the following:

  • 1 cup oatmeal
  • 1 cup coconut flakes (my kids don’t like the texture but love the taste so I pulverize it to a powder using my blender)
  • 1/2 cup pecans (can also use almonds, peanuts, walnuts, or eliminate the nuts)
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup hazelnut butter (can also use peanut butter, apple butter, almond butter, etc)
  • 1/2 cup ground flax seed
  • 1/3 cup raw honey (you can use regular honey but it isn’t as nutritious as raw honey)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (see my vanilla extract recipe here)

Throw all of the ingredients into a bowl. Use a fork or your hands and mix well.

Cover and refrigerate for about 20 minutes. This makes them easier to handle. Remove the mixture from the refrigerator and form it into bars or balls. You want to make them into 24 individual servings.  If you choose to make snack balls then I suggest using a scoop to get them the same size each time.

Store them in a container in the fridge. They’ll stay good for up to a week but we’ve never made it that long and still had some left. These are usually all gone by day three!

Here is the basic nutritional breakdown. It could vary depending on what ingredients you use. For the recipe as I have given it, these are 121 calories each with 12 carbs and 2 grams of protein.

Our softball season ended with us winning only about half of the games played. So far we are undefeated in football. so what if we only played one game. Do you like the way I say “we” when I talk about that? Hey, I need some kind of credit for my part, right?

  1. Love these. My husband is a cyclist and I made a batch for him and a friend for an event they did a few weeks ago. They loved them, although we did lose quite a lot of the mixture during the making process… it’s so yummy!     We are a new football family this year also. Undefeated after 4 games! I make homemade sports drink from 3 cups water, about 2 tblspoon honey, juice of 1 lemon, juice of 1 lime, 1/2 tsp. salt, and a couple shots of Concentrace. Tastes pretty good.

      This is something I have wanted to try in addition to the protein bites. Thanks so much for the recipe. I have not heard of Concentrace though. Where do you buy yours? You have me very interested in trying this. 🙂

  3. I have a homemade LaraBar Recipe that’s SO yummy going up on Monday! *wink* on the Vanilla….just made my third batch. I gave most of the last one away….keeping this one!

    I am going to try your recipe….as I love coconut and oats. Also found one for “cliff bar & TRIO” versions. Just need a couple ingredients before I can try them.

  4. Thanks for this. My son is a cross country runner, and has started eating me out of hose and home the past week or so since practice has gotten harder. The Dr wants him to put on weight (6’1″ abou t109lb) and we suggested protein shakes – Matt can’t handle the taste of them. So this is a nice alternative to try. Though he’s fuss at many things in there so I’ll have to get creative.
