Cleaning House Spiritually: Getting Started

Who may ascend the hill of the LORD? Who may stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false.
Psalms 24:3-4

Lately I’ve been sort of absent from the online world. That’s because God is doing some major work in our lives. We are attempting to initiate a revival from right here in our homes.

We have gone back to our home church. We are ridding our home of impure things and at times burning things that we believe influenced us so negatively that we don’t want anyone else to have to deal with it. We are also consecrating our home to Him. We are filing ourselves with His Word and walking towards His purpose for our lives.

It all started with prayer:

God change me. Use me. I may not immediately like what you have in mind but I give you permission to change my heart.

Can I tell you that He did?

In the beginning this is how I felt: I don’t like blogging less. I don’t like devoting all of my time to things that don’t satisfy my flesh. I don’t like not seeing immediate results. I don’t like the not knowing.

Now I see so much fruit from our obedience that I can’t stop chasing after what He wants for us. Previously I prayed for God to change me and use me but in my heart it was conditioned with a clause: He had to make His will fit my lifestyle.

God isn’t into lifestyles. He is into matters of the heart. Those are the things that bring Him glory. Not the kind of car I drive or how many TVs I have.

There has been such a dramatic change in my life that I just had to share it. While we haven’t completely cleaned out our home yet I can tell you that the areas that were thoroughly cleaned, anointed, and prayed through carry a tangible presence of God.

I know that may scare some people off but I am not sure why it does. The spiritual world existed long before the physical world. I am finally coming to a place where I can co-exist in both. No more teetering back and forth. I want clean hands and a pure heart. I want to walk in His presence every day. How about you?

  5. I just happened upon your wonderful blog. I have been purging our lives and home of things that don’t glorify God for over a year. It truly is amazing that what you put into your heart, mind and soul truly matters. You will scare people off. You will stand apart. But, as a good friend told me recently when I struggled with following the path of Christ and being accepted by my old friends she said “some people will not like you because you are living in the truth.” And as our priest said recently, “if you are a Christian you will not be popular”.

  6. Wow Amy – what a great post! I’m really excited to read this – it echoes a few messages I’ve been hearing, but I can’t wait to see what God is going to do with you!

  7. Ditto as the other commenters, would like to here more about this. The how and what was let go off. Thanks for the post as this is something I am struggling with as well, to do and how to do it.

  8. Looking forward to hearing more about this, Amy. May God bless you as you strive to follow Him.

  9. Amen! That is so awesome! I am in total agreement with living this lifestyle. Not my will, but His. Very encouraging post! Thank you for sharing!

  10. Wow! This is challenging for me – thank you! I would love to hear more about the “how” in this process – I agree that so much of what we think is important in life gets in the way of our relationship with the Lord! It would be great to hear how you went about deciding what these obstacles were, how you got rid of them, and then how you claimed that space for Jesus – if you’re willing to share, as I know it’s probably a deeply personal experience. Thank you so much for bringing awareness & sharing something so important! I’m going to be thinking on this for awhile . . .

Love it!!! I am right there with you! God’s word promises…IF we seek Him, we WILL find Him. Spiritual renewal and revival will come to those who are willing to do things God’s way, even if it means relinquishing some of our own ways. At my house…we too are seeking. We are paving the way for revival through prayer and purification!

  12. “God isn’t into lifestyles. He is into matters of the heart.” –so true!
