In my Unoccupied, Swept Clean, and Put In Order post yesterday I talked about Matthew 12:44 being the foundation for our home’s cleanliness. Today I’ll attempt to break a bit of it down for you. Let’s read the whole section that this scripture comes from:
The Sign of Jonah
38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”
39 He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now something greater than Jonah is here. 42 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here.
43 “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. 45 Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.”
This scripture echoes the urgings I have constantly felt from the Holy Spirit and that I have gleaned from Matthew 12. Repent. Repent. Repent. That is the first thing I noticed about it when God led me there.
And I repented of all I could think of but that wasn’t enough. My spirit was still grieving. I sought Him more to understand.
Then I kept coming back to this scripture too:
Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.
Again, I kept seeking Him to understand what I should be repenting for. I also took note that 2 Chronicles 7:14 refers to healing of our land. I thought to myself that is a greater result so let’s back it up and I asked the Lord to tell me how to get there. Then He reminded me that our bodies are the dwelling of His Holy Spirit so you guessed it, I sought scriptures about that.
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.
So that got me thinking. And praying more. And seeking. I still didn’t understand what He was trying to tell me because I thought that I had repented for my sins and that I was taking care of my temple. I thought I was doing all of these things. I stopped being online so much because it was causing me to not get enough exercise. I was eating right and numerous other things so what was I forgetting? “But it is about the heart,” He spoke to me. Then I remembered these:
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
I prayed that if I was lacking in any area for Him to show me. And you know He did, right?
It hit me like a ton of bricks. My body is the dwelling, the temple of His Holy Spirit. I am made in His image. My dwelling is this home that I spend most all of my time in. My home needed to be purified and sanctified just like my body! When our homes are purified and sanctified then our land (BIGGER picture) can be healed. It all starts with us and expands from there. This is in direct correlation to caring for my body, my temple, because the things in my home are what feeds my spirit (or starves it) the most.
Are you getting this?
Now, it is not like we have books on witchcraft or Buddhas laying around our house but God did show us some things that were grieving our spirit so they had to go. These things may not have seemed significant enough to cause a problem but they were.
I’ll share more tomorrow. Please, share your thoughts.
