Study to show thyself approved…

Lately I’ve just been studying and studying. I feel such a great need to get back to the Word. His Bible. I love reading other books that supplement but goodness, so much of it is milk. I need something meaty (Hebrews 5:12). I want to know more and more about our Lord and Savior and to do that I have to study His Word. After all, He is the Word (1 John 1:1) and He fulfilled the Torah completely (Matthew 5:17).

In all my years of studying I never stopped to consider Jesus’ heritage or His culture. The more I study my own, the more I realize how much a part it has played in the person I am, how I speak, think, and live life. This has led me to know more about Jesus’ heritage and culture; the Jewish and Hebrew.

Studying God's Word

I started by inquiring of a friend who is more knowledgeable in this area than I am. Tracy gave me some resources to look into and shared some posts with me that she had written. After praying and considering what God would have me do I took the first step and read a book called Sitting At the Feet of Rabbi Jesus. It was such an eye opener. The significance of scripture is so much greater now that I understand the cultural implications. I know, love, respect, honor, and and am in awe of my Jesus so much more now than I ever was before.

Now, I am reading a couple of additional books and taking some online courses to have a greater understanding of Jesus’ life and time. Once I am done and can fully recommend it I will provide a link. I just have to filter it all first and make sure it lines up with the Bible. So far, so good. In fact, so far it’s been great!

So tell me, have you ever studied these aspects of Christ?

  1. I have taken several Bible courses, but unfortunately I was more in the mind of passing than I was in grasping what I was studying. I’d like to dig back out those textbooks and go through them.

I completely agree with your assessment though. Lately, I have felt such a TUG on my heart to study, study, study… and the things of this world have just seemed so watered down to me. I can’t seem to get enough of our Lord and His greatness. I want more!!!

I can’t wait to see what goodies you find in this area. Look forward to seeing what you come up with!!! 🙂

  2. I love this! Your transperancy is such a blessing to me, Amy. I will be looking for this book and make it my next read. Currently I am reading “The Jesus Creed” by Scot McKnight which draws on the traditions which were very much a part of the culture and faith present during the life of Jesus. Thank you for sharing this. Bless you!!!

  3. I read Sitting At the Feet a year or two ago & it completely floored me. It was so eye opening to see how Jesus’ culture brings His words all the more meaning. I recommend that one to everyone. So exciting to further our study!

  4. Thanks for a great post. I enjoy reading articles from other christ minded women. Heb. 5:12 touches me in my life now. Thanks!
